Roula Pispirigou, the mother at the centre of a high-profile case involving the deaths of her three children in Patras, Greece, was urgently transferred to hospital amid a significant decline in her health condition. Pispirigou, who has been convicted in connection to the case, is currently suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus, a degenerative autoimmune disease that has severely impacted her vital organs.
According to her lawyer, Vaso Pantazi, the illness has led to considerable weight loss, with Pispirigou reportedly shedding over 30 kilograms, and has caused visible hair loss in some areas of her scalp. The severity of her symptoms, described as excruciating joint and bone pain, necessitated an emergency hospitalisation.

Pantazi asserted that Pispirigou’s condition has been officially diagnosed by a public hospital, dismissing any rumours that it might be a feigned illness. Despite the gravity of her health situation, her legal defence does not intend to file for an early release on health grounds.
In terms of family connections, Pispirigou was recently permitted to engage in a video call with her family for the first time in late October, an emotional event for her as she was able to see her parents’ home and her children’s belongings. This communication was facilitated under the prison’s regulations, which accommodate inmates whose relatives reside far away or cannot visit in person.
Looking forward, Pispirigou’s case is set to appear again in the Court of Appeal in February. Discussions are underway about potentially consolidating the cases of children Malena and Irida during these proceedings. Additionally, a new team of Greek experts, including forensic scientists and medical professionals, has been assembled to bolster Pispirigou’s defence through robust scientific and technical support.
