The unpredictable schedule of working in dermatology presents unique challenges for consistent language learning, with work demands often extending into weekends. Julia’s individual lessons provide the flexibility essential for maintaining progress despite her variable timetable. Being able to book sessions just two days in advance means she can adapt her learning around emergency shifts and changing hospital schedules.

This personalised approach allows her to pause for clarification whenever needed, which wouldn’t be possible in group classes with her irregular hours. When she does have free time, Julia and her husband escape to the nearby mountains for hiking and cycling in summer, or skiing and ski touring in winter – Munich’s proximity to nature being one of the reasons she loves living there. After spending all day with patients, these mountain adventures provide the perfect way to unwind. She’s also been experimenting with cooking Greek dishes at home, though as a vegetarian she admits she’s missing some traditional elements. Her attempts at making dolmades don’t quite match her aunts’ versions yet, but she’s determined to keep trying.

Building bridges between generations through conversation

Julia’s father emigrated from Greece as a child and, like many immigrants, primarily speaks dialect with his family rather than standard Greek.
