A complicated rescue operation was successfully conducted in Lavrio, Greece, where a 30-year-old cave explorer fell into a 55-metre ravine. Firefighters from the EMAK rescue team were able to communicate with the injured man from the onset of the operation, and although he was in pain, he could still move his arms and legs.
The incident occurred during the explorer’s attempt to reach an area of interest to caving enthusiasts. It was estimated that a failure in his descending equipment caused the man to fall sharply onto the rocky floor below, leaving him injured. Fortunately, the presence of bushes on the site managed to slightly cushion his fall, which likely prevented more severe injuries.

The rescue operation involved delicate manoeuvres to avoid further injury as the man had suffered back injuries in the fall. Using specialised ropes, the EMAK team carefully lowered themselves into the ravine and placed him on a special stretcher for extraction.
The challenging terrain of the gorge made the rescue particularly demanding. Mistakes could have led to dire consequences, making the safe retrieval from a depth of 55 metres a significant achievement. Once lifted to the edge of the ravine, the injured explorer was immediately transferred to a waiting EKAV ambulance and rushed to the General Hospital Gennimatas for necessary medical attention.
Details regarding the severity of his injuries have not yet been disclosed. However, the coordinated efforts of the rescue team and medical personnel ensured a rapid response to the incident, highlighting both the dangers faced by cave explorers and the efficiency of emergency services in Greece.
