The Greek scientific community is mourning the loss of Christos Papaioannou, a prominent seismologist and Research Director at the Institute of Technical Seismology and Anti-Seismic Constructions (ITSAC), which is part of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (EPPO). The esteemed researcher passed away at the age of 65.
The Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization expressed deep sorrow over Papaioannou’s passing, highlighting his substantial contributions to the field of seismology. In honour of his work and legacy, the organization announced several commemorative actions, including offering condolences to his family, placing a wreath at his funeral, and making donations to charitable institutions. An organizational delegation will also attend his funeral, scheduled to take place this Friday, May 2nd, at the cemetery of the Resurrection of the Lord in Therma, Thessaloniki.
Papaioannou was a pioneering figure in modern Greek seismological research, significantly shaping the understanding of seismic hazards and historical seismology in the region. His career spanned over 35 years, during which he held various influential roles, including a tenure at the Seismological Station of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and later at ITSAC, where he served as Research Director from 2010 onward.

Born in Thessaloniki in 1958, Papaioannou held a degree in Geology and a PhD from AUTH. His academic ventures included postdoctoral research in renowned institutions across Europe and the United States, enhancing his expertise in areas such as seismic hazard assessment, earthquake sequence studies, and historical seismology. His scholarly output includes over 100 scientific papers and four important publications, with his work being referenced almost 2,000 times in the academic community.
Colleagues and students fondly recall Papaioannou’s dedication and passion for his field. Professor Kostas Papazachos from AUTH shared memories of working alongside Papaioannou, acknowledging him as a foundational pillar in contemporary seismic research and remembering him warmly as ‘Christakis.’
Throughout his esteemed career, Papaioannou actively contributed to numerous international and national conferences, both as a participant and an organizer, further solidifying his status as a respected voice in the scientific community.
